It must be assumed that bodyboarding and surfing are completely different modalities. Although they share the main similarity that both modalities are developed in the practice of riding a wave, there are different circumstances. Therefore, the choice between one or the other is determined by the preferences of each person. Both options offer different experiences, each with its own charm and challenges. In this article, we will explore in detail what each choice entails, highlighting the unique characteristics of bodyboarding and highlighting the notable differences between these two exciting aquatic practices.

Bodyboarding: The symphony of gliding on water

Bodyboarding is a form of gliding over the waves that involves the use of a shorter and wider board, designed to be used while the body is lying down. This practice is rooted in simplicity and accessibility, allowing ocean lovers to experience the thrill of surfing with a faster learning curve. In addition, this practice is done with the use of an accessory that is not used in surfing and that is the fins, more about it below.

Key Features of Bodyboarding:

One of the main characteristics of bodyboards is that they are shorter and lighter than traditional surfboards and the materials are cheaper than those used in surfboards. The choice of bodyboards starts from a basic rule and that is that, resting on the ground, it has to reach the navel, in this way you can know the ideal size of the board you need.

Its concave shape can have two different finishes, therefore, there are two main types of boards, on the one hand there are the “bat tail” and on the other hand, the “crescent tail”. The latter are used to catch waves lying down or “Drop Knee”, that is, on one knee, this is the most common type of board. While the former are only used lying down, which provides greater maneuverability.

In addition, another feature is the use of built-in fins, which allow an efficient glide on the foam of the waves and favors the displacement, since the boards are wider than in surfing and do not have keels.

While the fundamental characteristic is that, unlike traditional surfing, bodyboarding is done in a horizontal position on the board. This approach provides greater stability and facilitates control when facing the waves, it is easier but does not allow surfing very big waves.

Also of note is the ease of learning, bodyboarding is known for its relative ease of learning, making it a popular choice for beginners and those who want to quickly dive into the surfing action.

Key differences between surfboard and bodyboard:

The fundamental difference in posture and positioning between traditional surfing and bodyboarding is not only based on the simple inclination of the body. It is about adopting two different dances with the waves: one vertical and the other horizontal.

Classic surfing, with its upright position on the board, invites surfers to engage in vertical movement, defying gravity with every maneuver. In contrast, bodyboarding embraces horizontality, allowing riders to immerse themselves in a more intimate dance with the waves, gliding over the foam in a direct connection with the flow of the ocean.

Surfboards, with their ability to stand up, give surfers a unique freedom to make wider turns and experience speed that unleashes on the crests of the waves. Classic surfing is a race against the wave, with subtle turns and daring maneuvers that defy the forces of the water. In contrast, bodyboards, when sliding horizontally, find their maneuverability in tighter and faster turns. This way of moving through the water gives bodyboarders a unique agility to take advantage of the waves in a more reactive way.

The shape and size of the boards play an essential role in how they face the waves. Longer, sleeker surfboards are designed to glide efficiently over larger waves. Their sleek silhouette promotes speed and control in more challenging surf conditions. On the other hand, the bodyboards are shorter and wider, a configuration that is perfectly suited for gliding over smaller waves and for tighter maneuvers. The compact efficiency of the bodyboards allows riders to dive into the wave game with ease and agility.

Traditional surfing, with its emphasis on standing up on the board, often involves a steeper learning curve, so it is advisable to take a surfing course to lay the foundations, we have many courses available at Mojo Surf! Mastering the art of balancing and performing maneuvers while standing on the board requires practice and patience. On the other hand, bodyboarding offers a smoother entry into the world of surfing. The horizontal position provides greater stability from the start, making bodyboarding more accessible to beginners looking to immerse themselves in the thrills of surfing without the initial complexity associated with standing up. It is a friendly invitation to explore the waves from a more comfortable and gradual perspective.

Conclusion: A personal choice of emotions

Ultimately, the choice between a surfboard and a bodyboard is a personal journey, a journey where each individual dives into the depths of the ocean in search of unique aquatic thrills. Both practices offer a thrilling passage into the heart of the sea, each displaying its own distinctive style and presenting challenges that resonate differently in the surfer’s spirit.

Gliding over the waves in an upright position on a surfboard is a challenging and elegant act that invites the surfer to conquer the crest of the ocean. The unique perspective of facing the waves standing upright, performing wide turns and defying the force of the water, grants a deeper connection to the momentum and grace of the waves. It is a vertical dance that challenges limits and allows the surfer to embrace the totality of the surfing experience.

In contrast, to feel the adrenaline rush of bodyboarding is to immerse yourself in a more intimate dance with the waves, gliding horizontally over the effervescent foam. The agility and speed of the tighter turns offer a more immediate and accessible experience for those looking for a smooth entry into the world of surfing. The adrenaline of bodyboarding is experienced in direct proximity to the waves, a visceral connection with the forces of the sea.

While both paths offer unparalleled thrills, it is subtly revealed that traditional surfing, with its elegance and unique challenges, can offer a more complete and rewarding experience. However, the ultimate choice is firmly in the hands of the individual, ready to embrace the wave that best resonates with their adventurous spirit and satisfies their intimate quest for connection with the vast and exciting world of the ocean. Ultimately, whether standing or lying down, on a surfboard, bodyboard or SUP (paddle surf), the choice is yours, and the wave, an endless canvas to explore and conquer, just let yourself go with what your body asks for.

The art of surfing is a fearless dance with the waves, a fusion of skill and grace that takes time to perfect. For those looking to master the waves and elevate their surfing experience, continually improving technique becomes an essential component. In this article, we’ll explore practical strategies and tips to help you polish your surfing skills and take on the waves with renewed confidence.

Know your equipment: the importance of the board

Before venturing out to improve your technique, it is crucial to understand the relationship between your board and the sea. Choosing the right board directly impacts your ability to maneuver and ride the waves. Experiment with different sizes and shapes to discover which one best suits your surfing style.

A suitable board is your ally in the conquest of the waves. You can always consult professionals for advice on what type of board is best for you in case you are taking a surf course or in the store where you are going to buy your board.

Find your position

Posture in surfing is not based on a physical position; it is about fluid movement with the waves, an intrinsic connection that defines your ability to glide gracefully over the water. In the quest to improve your technique, finding your optimal posture becomes an art that is far more complex than mere physical position on the board.

The center of gravity, a fundamental concept in a surfer’s posture, is the point around which the surfer’s weight is distributed. Keeping this center low and evenly distributed on the board is key. This position creates a solid base that allows for balance and stability, essential elements for maneuvering through the waves efficiently.

The slight knee flex becomes the link between the surfer and the surfboard. This flex not only cushions the irregularities of the water terrain, but also facilitates a smooth transition between turns and changes of direction. It is the flexibility in the knees that allows you to adapt to the variations of the swell, adjusting your posture according to the changing demands of the sea.

Keeping your back straight is not only an ergonomic principle; it is a constant reminder of the importance of body alignment in surfing. A straight back promotes stability and prevents excessive leaning that could throw you off balance. Likewise, a straight back facilitates forward gaze, a habit that expands your peripheral vision and allows you to anticipate approaching crests and slopes.

Looking ahead is an indication of direction which, in turn, is a tactical strategy. By focusing your gaze toward the horizon, you establish a visual connection with the approaching waves, allowing you to anticipate their strength and shape. This anticipation is key to adjusting your stance accordingly, preparing you for the next phase of surfing.

Work on your paddling

In the vast canvas of surfing, paddling emerges as a fundamental skill that often goes unnoticed but is essential to unleashing the full potential of the waves. This movement, which connects the surfer to the swaying of the ocean, is the driving force behind your connection to the waves and determines your ability to surf them skillfully.

Improving your paddling technique is like tuning the strings of an instrument before a performance. This seemingly simple act carries with it the promise of paddling faster, catching waves more efficiently and positioning yourself in the perfect spot to harness the magic of the sea. It’s a dance between your muscles, the board and the currents, where each paddle becomes a note in the symphony of surfing.

Strengthening the muscles of the torso and arms becomes a crucial task for those looking to improve their paddling ability. These muscle groups act as the propulsive engine that propels your board through the water. Endurance, the key to a powerful paddle, is built with specific exercises that strengthen and tone these muscles, giving you the power you need to glide over the waves with speed and grace.

Practicing the correct rowing technique is like fine-tuning the precision of your movements in a martial art. Each stroke must be executed efficiently, taking advantage of the maximum amount of water with each stroke. Adjusting the inclination and shape of your hands, as well as precise synchronization with the movement of the waves, allows you to maximize your ability to move through the water and facilitates a smooth transition between strokes.

At the heart of working on your paddling is the understanding that paddling is not just a mechanical action; it is a connection to the forces that give life to the ocean. Each stroke, like a pulse, connects you to the energy of the sea, allowing you to feel the pulsations of the waves and adjust your rhythm accordingly.

In short, you have to start with some basics such as strengthening your torso and arms, perfecting your technique and understanding the movement of the waves. A priori, this action appears to be simple, but it becomes one of the keys to unlock the power of surfing and immerses you deeper into the harmony of the ocean.

Read the waves: become a student of the sea

In surfing it is necessary to keep your physical skills perfect, but also the ability to read the sea, both aspects positively condition your experiences in the water, therefore, it is vital to observe the waves, understand their pattern, learn to anticipate their behavior, identify the points of the crest or peak, areas with higher wave formation and currents. These are just a few aspects to keep in mind to be a student of the sea and it gives you the advantage to anticipate and react proactively. However, with the development of technologies, there are now digital tools such as Surf Forecast, to analyze the state of the sea.

Learn from the experts: take a Surfing course

Instruction from experienced instructors can significantly accelerate your progress. A surf course provides you with personalized feedback, correcting subtle errors in your technique and offering valuable advice. The combination of theory taught in the classroom and practice in the water gives you a comprehensive understanding that will boost your skills, at Mojo Surf we have courses for all levels, it’s never too late to do it!

Practice patience

Improving your surfing technique is a journey that requires time and patience. Don’t be discouraged by setbacks. Every day in the water is a learning opportunity. Keep a positive mindset and celebrate the small accomplishments. Patience is the secret of surf masters who have perfected their art over the years.

In conclusion, mastering the waves by improving your surfing technique is a process that combines knowledge, practice and perseverance. Know your equipment, perfect your posture, work on your paddling, read the waves and seek expert guidance. With each session in the water, you will move one step closer to surfing mastery, unlocking a world of emotions and challenges that only true lovers of the sea can understand.

When it comes to taking your first steps into the world of surfing, the choice between renting a surfboard and acquiring your own is not just a logistical detail, but a crucial decision that will set the tone for your initial experience. This dilemma reflects the duality between the thrill of diving into the waves and the practical necessity of properly equipping yourself for this aquatic adventure.

Surfing, seen as an open door to adventure and freedom in the sea, presents an initial challenge: should you commit to buying a board from the start, or is it wiser to try different options through rentals before making a more definitive decision? The answer to this question lies in the perspective of the novice surfer, one who is taking his or her first hesitant steps on a board and is looking to find the perfect balance between excitement and caution.

It is during this initial phase that the suggestion to consider a surf course before embarking on the experience of surfing on your own becomes especially important. Renting a board during these lessons provides a number of benefits, freeing you from the immediate responsibility of acquiring your own equipment, and even wetsuit rentals can be arranged.

In conclusion, this choice includes aspects such as economic resources, that is, the liquidity to face this expense, since it implies a considerable investment and it is a decision that will impact the quality of your incursions in the waves.

From a novice surfer’s perspective, the rental option provides the flexibility to adapt to your evolving skills and preferences. This approach not only paves the way to surfing mastery, but also highlights the importance of learning in a structured way, preferably through a course, to ensure solid and safe progress in this exciting aquatic journey.

The initial decision: rent or buy

In the early stages of your journey in this sport, you are faced with an exciting crossroads: the decision to rent or buy your first board. This seemingly simple step turns into a dualism of choices that defines not only your next steps on the waves, but also the very essence of your first experiences.

The overwhelming feeling that accompanies this choice is not a matter of purchasing a board, but rather a thought-provoking, introspective exercise. Should you immediately dive into buying your own board, committing to a considerable investment from the start? Or would it be wiser to explore the possibilities, try out different boards and discover your affinity for surfing before making a more definitive decision?

The answer to this dilemma lies in the complexity of your own experience and your long-term goals. At this early stage, where the waves are a blank canvas awaiting your first strokes, the choice between renting and buying becomes a dance between the anticipation of the unknown and the wisdom of caution.

For those who yearn to dive into the sea, the rental option presents itself as a no-strings-attached introduction. By opting to rent, you give yourself the unique opportunity to explore the diversity of boards available, discovering how each shape and size impacts your sensations in the water. This period of experimentation not only refines your technique, but also sharpens your understanding of what you are really looking for in a surfboard.

The decision to rent not only involves the physical exploration of boards, but also frees you from the pressure of making a hasty decision. By not immediately committing to the purchase, you give yourself the freedom to learn and evolve without the added burden of the initial outlay. This approach allows your first encounters with surfing to be a lighter, more enjoyment-focused experience, allowing you to gradually adapt to the wonders of the waves without the worry of maintaining and transporting your own equipment.

In this context, it is not just a pragmatic choice; it is a valuable step that allows you to dive into the surfing waters with the flexibility to discover your own rhythm in this exciting aquatic journey.

Renting: an interesting option for beginners

When you are in the early stages of your surfing journey, the option of renting a board presents itself as a gateway to an ocean of opportunity and learning. This choice becomes a window to exploration, adaptability and the possibility of gradually and consciously fine-tuning your connection to the waves.

First of all, this option reveals itself as a dynamic learning experience. This process of experimentation allows you to immerse yourself in the diversity of board sizes and shapes available. From the longest and most stable boards to the shortest and most agile, it gives you the freedom to discover, through practice, what is the perfect combination that suits your emerging surfing style.

The advantage of this variety lies not only in the practice, but also in the deep understanding of how each board influences your experience on the waves. By renting, you become a fearless explorer, trying out different configurations and discovering the subtleties that transform a simple board into an extension of your own style and personality in the water.

In addition to the hands-on experience, the act of renting eliminates the unnecessary pressure associated with making hasty purchasing decisions. In the early stages of your learning, every session in the water is a lesson, and every board you try adds a valuable chapter to your surfing history. This option gives you the time and flexibility to perfect your technique as you learn, avoiding the feeling of immediate commitment that often accompanies buying your own board.

Buying, a long-term decision

As you advance in your journey through the surfing waters and feel your confidence solidify on the board, the consideration arises to take the next step: the purchase of your own board. This decision becomes a long-term commitment, a deeper connection to the waves you have learned to love.

Acquiring your own board marks a phase in your journey where your relationship with surfing becomes more personal and ingrained. By owning your own board, you can fine-tune every aspect to perfectly align with your individual preferences. From shape and size to material and design, every detail becomes a tangible expression of your unique surfing style.

Customizing your equipment is not only a matter of aesthetics; it also translates into tangible improvements in your performance on the water. Familiarity with your own board allows for greater control and response, as you adapt to the subtleties of its behavior in different surf conditions.

However, for those taking their first steps in surfing, the option to buy outright may carry with it certain limitations. The initial experience, marked by exploration and adaptability, can be positively influenced by the flexibility offered by renting. The diversity of boards available for rental allows you to adjust your choice according to your progress and evolution as a novice surfer.

One aspect that must be taken into account is the fact that in the beginning, you tend to learn with boards that provide greater buoyancy, larger and are usually made of “corkopan”. As you progress, you tend to use smaller boards that contribute to the development of increasingly complex maneuvers.

In short, the decision to buy your own board is a step that symbolizes the consolidation of your identity as a surfer. While this option provides a more intimate and personalized connection with the waves, the wise choice to rent on your first few paddles provides the flexibility to adapt to your surfing style.

Conclusion

At the beginning of your exciting journey through the world of surfing, the choice between renting or buying your first board is an essential chapter, a crossroads where caution and audacity intertwine. This decision, far from being a merely practical choice, becomes an initial statement on how you want to embrace the waves and learn the secrets of the ocean.

The complexity of this choice lies in the diversity of experiences and goals that each individual carries with them. Do you embark on surfing with the ambition to carve a long-term relationship with the waves, or do you prefer to explore the wealth of options before committing? The answer to these questions is forged in the crucible of your own experience and aspirations, where each choice weaves the unique fabric of your surfing story.

The fundamental reminder lies in the importance of learning the basics before taking to the waves. Accessing a surfing course in your first steps not only accelerates your progress, but also equips you with crucial knowledge about water safety and essential techniques and you don’t have to worry about getting started on the board, as it is usually provided by the school. At the same time, the vision of professionals in this sport is crucial to analyze which option best suits your needs, at Mojo Surf we have a team of professionals who will be happy to help you!

Remember, the surfing journey is a constant learning curve, a dance with the waves that evolves with each experience. While the option to purchase your own board may be a desired destination on your journey, the initial choice to rent offers the flexibility to adapt to changes in your surfing style as you immerse yourself in the challenges of the ocean.

Safety in surfing is a fundamental aspect that not only guarantees a more pleasurable experience, but also protects the lives of surfers. This exciting water sport carries certain risks that must be approached responsibly, but as long as one is aware, the risks will be greatly minimized. Here we explore the importance of surf safety and how taking appropriate measures can make a difference.

A solid understanding of ocean conditions is essential for safe surfing. Before taking to the water, surfers should evaluate factors such as wave size and strength, currents and wind direction, as knowing the environment helps to make informed decisions about when and where to surf, minimizing the risk of accidents.

Using the right equipment is crucial to ensure safe surfing. Wetsuits offer protection against the cold, UV rays or rubbing against the board, while surfboards must be suitable for the surfer’s skill level. In addition, wearing a leash is a must, it ensures that the board remains close to the surfer in case of a fall, avoiding dangerous situations.

Protection against weather changes

Surfing safety involves being aware of changing weather conditions and possible sudden changes in the environment. Storms, tidal changes and other factors can drastically affect sea conditions.

Surfers must be prepared to adapt and make quick decisions to ensure their safety, taking into account the combination of their technical skills, knowledge, appropriate equipment and respect for the environment.

Adopting a conscious and responsible attitude not only enhances the individual experience, but also contributes to the overall well-being of the surfing community. Respect for other surfers and ocean users is fundamental to maintaining a safe environment. Communication and courtesy are essential to avoid collisions and dangerous situations. Maintaining an appropriate distance between surfers and respecting turns contribute to a safer and more enjoyable surfing environment.

Ultimately, enjoying surfing safely allows surfing enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the thrill of the waves with confidence and peace of mind.

Acquiring solid surfing skills and receiving proper coaching are essential steps to increase safety in the water, at Mojo Surf we have a wide range of surfing courses adapted to all levels. Beginner surfers should start in friendlier conditions and gradually progress to more challenging waves. The ability to read the waves, perform maneuvers consistently and know the rules of water etiquette are vital aspects of safety.

Key elements in surf clothing

Wetsuits are essential for any committed surfer, providing a crucial thermal barrier in cold water and protecting against the elements. Their primary function is to keep the surfer warm in cold water environments, allowing them to prolong their time in the water. Key features of wetsuits include their insulating ability, flexibility and durability. It is true that in waters like those we have in the Canary Islands, the temperature in winter does not drop as drastically as it does in other areas such as the Basque Country or Europe, but even so, it is convenient for a better well-being and makes it possible to spend more time surfing.

Wetsuits work by retaining a thin layer of water between the surfer’s body and the suit. This water is heated by the body, creating an efficient thermal barrier. Sealed seams and watertight closures are crucial features that prevent cold water from entering, keeping the surfer comfortable and protected.

Climatic diversity and variations in water conditions have resulted in different types of wetsuits. Full wetsuits are ideal for colder waters, while short-sleeved or sleeveless suits are appropriate for warmer climates. In addition, there are wetsuits with different thicknesses of neoprene, adapting to the specific needs of each surfer and the water conditions. At the same time, in recent years, new technologies have made it possible to create even more insulating materials, ideal for areas with more extreme climates.

Rashguards, or lycra, are essential garments that not only provide comfort, but also offer protection against chafing and sunburn. These tight-fitting, usually long-sleeved shirts are designed for use in aquatic environments and are a valuable addition to surfing gear. Many surfers use this accessory in conjunction with long swimming trunks, especially in hot areas.

The main function of rashguards is to prevent skin irritation caused by constant rubbing against the surfboard. They also act as an effective barrier against the sun’s harmful rays, reducing the risk of sunburn during long sessions in the water.

Commonly made with quick-drying materials and sun protection technology, rashguards offer comfort and functionality. Designs range from simple solid colors to eye-catching styles with original prints, allowing surfers to express their personal style while staying protected.

Boardshorts are an integral part of surfing gear, providing freedom of movement, breathability and style. These waterproof shorts are essential for comfort and performance while surfing.

The boardshorts’ lightweight construction and quick-drying fabric allow for a wide range of motion, essential for maneuvering in the waves. Breathability prevents moisture buildup, ensuring surfers feel comfortable during their sessions in the water.

Together, these key clothing elements ensure that surfers are properly equipped to face the water conditions and maximize their comfort and performance in the ocean. The right choice of wetsuits, rashguards and boardshorts not only optimizes the surfing experience, but also contributes to the surfer’s safety and protection. To this end, there are countless surf clothing brands that will allow you to find the perfect personal gear.

What aspects should be considered?

The changing nature of the ocean requires surfers to consider the type of wave and sea conditions when selecting their equipment. The temperature of the water and environment is a critical factor when choosing surf clothing. Thinner wetsuits are suitable for warmer waters, while thicker wetsuits will be needed in colder climates. The right combination ensures a comfortable and safe experience in the water.

Each person’s surfing style and individual preferences play an important role in the choice of clothing. Some surfers prefer the freedom of movement of boardshorts, while others opt for the added protection of full wetsuits. Surf clothing should be tailored to each individual’s style and comfort.

The durability of surf clothing is crucial to ensure its lifespan. Considering the quality of materials and stitching ensures that the apparel can withstand the demands of surfing. In addition, knowing and following proper maintenance recommendations contributes to the longevity of the equipment.

In conclusion, the choice and care of surf clothing are essential aspects to ensure a safe and comfortable experience in this exciting water sport. Adopting a conscious mindset and following practical advice from experienced surfers contributes not only to the optimization of performance in the water, but also to the preservation of equipment over time. With the right balance between functionality, safety and style, surfers can fully enjoy the thrill of the waves while making sure their clothing is ready to face any challenge, in Gran Canaria you have a good variety of surf clothing stores. Come to Mojo Surf and we will give you more tips so that clothing is not any kind of impediment!

Surfing, in its essence, is a captivating dance with the waves that has conquered hearts all over the world. Today, it has evolved to become an exciting and challenging sport that attracts people from every corner of the planet and of almost all ages.

A unique blend of adrenaline and serenity is experienced by those who practice this exercise, which has earned a reputation for offering a liberating and transformative experience. The sensation of gliding over a wave or feeling the force of the ocean around you as you ride the tube is hard to describe and even harder to forget. It is this inexplicable allure that makes surfing more than just a physical activity, it is a way of life.

The first written documents on surfing date back to the second half of the 18th century and belong to the British navigator James Cook who, upon arriving to the Hawaiian Islands, observed locals on a platform surfing the waves. However, other theories also point to the Polynesian peoples and the Peruvian culture as precursors of this millenary art as a form of connection with the ocean and spirituality.

This article dives into the crucial fundamentals that every aspiring surfer should know before embracing the waves. Because, while the attraction to surfing may be instantaneous, mastering this art requires patience, dedication and, above all, a deep respect for the ocean. So, before diving into the salty waters, it is essential to understand that surfing, like any discipline, requires a solid foundation of knowledge and skills. It should also be noted that, ideally, you should be able to take a surfing course, at Mojo Surf we have courses for all levels.

The importance of learning the fundamentals is not just limited to improving your technical skills; safety also plays a vital role. The ocean is a dynamic and powerful environment that demands respect and understanding. Knowing the basics of surfing will not only allow you to enjoy the experience more fully, but will also provide you with the necessary tools to face the challenges that may arise, always starting from the premise that the sea is a powerful force that we cannot control.

So, before you embark on the thrilling adventure of surfing, let’s stop for a moment to explore the foundations of this exciting sport. From understanding wave formation and tide conditions to understanding the technique to embrace the waves with confidence and respect, join us on the fascinating journey through this world, at Mojo Surf we will tell you the secrets that make it a unique and unforgettable experience!

The heart of surfing beats to the rhythm of the waves, and understanding their language is essential for those who wish to master the art of gliding over them.

Understanding wave formation

Waves are the result of the interaction between the wind and the ocean surface. It begins with the force of the wind creating ripples on the surface of the water, becoming what we know as waves. These waves travel thousands of miles before reaching the shore, carrying with them a unique energy. Knowing the process of wave formation gives surfers a deeper understanding of their behavior and allows them to better anticipate and take advantage of the opportunities they offer.

In addition, not all waves are the same and the diversity in wave shape and size adds an exciting component to surfing. From gentle, steady beach waves to challenging tubes on reef breaks, each type of wave presents its own set of challenges and rewards. Recognizing these differences is essential to choosing the location and wave type that best suits your skill level and preferences.

Therefore, the ability to read the ocean goes beyond understanding wave formation. It involves assessing sea and wind conditions in real time. Wind direction and strength, as well as tide and underwater topography, significantly influence how waves behave. A skilled surfer learns to interpret these elements to make informed decisions about where and when to enter the water, thus maximizing the experience and minimizing risk. A positive aspect of the development of new technologies is that there are numerous websites where all these parameters can be observed, such as Surf Forecast.

In short, knowing the waves is like learning the alphabet of surfing. This knowledge not only improves your ability to cope with different conditions, but also adds an extra layer of appreciation for the complexity and beauty of the ocean.

Position, paddling and Take Off: the initial dance with the waves

This chapter dives into the subtle movements of standing on the board, the paddling techniques to conquer the point where the wave itself begins to push and the exciting transition to standing, known as the “Take Off”. Here, the connection between body and board comes to life, marking the beginning of an exciting journey on the waves.

Before launching into the ocean, the beach offers a canvas to hone fundamental skills, strengthen the specific muscles used in surfing, improve coordination and polish techniques without facing the forces of the water. The position on the board is the foundation on which all other surfing skills are built, both balance and maneuverability all depend on proper positioning. In turn, preparing the Take Off and working on the paddling on dry land are very necessary, as these exercises not only prepare physically, but also contribute to the construction of muscle memory that translates into improvements in the water.

The beach also offers specific exercise routines, not only to improve technique, but also to prevent physical injuries and improve cardiovascular fitness. It is vital to optimize strength, endurance and flexibility.

Before you face the exciting task of standing up on the board, it is crucial to master your paddling. Efficient paddling will not only get you to the right place at the right time, but will also conserve your energy for the exciting phases that follow. Be careful not to let your head swing from side to side, as this will have a big impact on the speed and efficiency of your paddling. Since the main thing that slows you down in the water is the resistance to forward motion, this is what happens when your head does not stay still.

Keeping your elbow high when your hand is about to enter the water will give you a huge benefit. It may seem simple, but it is one of the key techniques for proper paddling. If your hand and forearm stay vertical, then you will be able to grip the water and propel yourself forward with a greater area and for longer. The famous barrel drill will help you achieve optimal paddling.

The “Take Off” moment is the culmination of preparation, paddling and anticipation. Here, the transition from lying on the board to standing on the wave requires precision and speed. To achieve a successful Take Off, you need to anticipate the wave and start paddling before the wave reaches your position, this will allow you to pick up enough speed. Load your weight on the front part of the board trying not to sink the tip of the board. When you feel enough speed, take advantage of the inertia of the wave to get up. It is advisable to rent a surfboard before buying, to evaluate which type best suits your style.

The perfect posture, the paddling, the balance or the Take Off are just some of the elements needed to surf and make every movement an expression of your connection with the ocean. It takes time and practice, and it is always better to opt for a surf course to learn the basics properly. At Mojo Surf we are waiting for you to enter together in the fascinating world of surfing and start building unique memories and emotions!

Paddle Surfing, or SUP, has undergone an amazing transformation in recent years thanks to the visibility that has been given to this activity, one of the examples is the innovation of materials, as is the case with the introduction of inflatable SUP boards. This innovation has taken the popularity of this water sport to new heights, offering a versatile and convenient alternative to traditional boards. We have considered at MojoSurf, exploring in detail the evolution and advantages of these boards, highlighting why they have become the preferred choice of so many paddle surfers.

Portability without Commitments

The portability of inflatable SUP boards is a revolution for SUP enthusiasts. The ability to deflate and roll up the board not only simplifies transportation, but also eliminates the logistical barriers associated with rigid boards. Imagine the freedom of carrying your board in a backpack and venturing out to explore different locations around the island, or even being able to take it on a trip to areas where there are lakes, this type of board offers a huge range of possibilities. This exceptional portability not only facilitates the logistics of transport, but also provides the freedom to explore new paddling horizons without the geographical limitations that might arise with traditional boards. These boards, with their ability to adapt to diverse conditions, expand the scope of paddle surfing, offering paddle surfing enthusiasts the opportunity to discover unique aquatic environments.

Advanced Construction Technology

Technological advancement in the construction of inflatable SUP boards has been key in dispelling initial concerns about durability and performance. The combination of PVC layering and drop-stitch fabric technologies ensures a robust and rigid structure, essential for a stable and safe paddling experience. These high quality materials not only provide resistance to water pressure, but also allow the boards to maintain their desired shape during activity. This level of performance puts inflatable SUP boards on par with their rigid counterparts, giving paddlers the confidence to fully enjoy their experience on the water.

Adaptability to Various Ability Levels

The exceptional stability of the boards is a feature that has been key to their rapid adoption in the Paddle Surf community. This stability, combined with the ability to adjust air pressure, makes them a wise choice for beginners and experienced users alike. For those taking their first steps in paddle surfing, the stability provided by these boards facilitates learning, allowing beginners to feel comfortable and confident in the water. At the same time, experienced paddlers can enjoy the freedom to adjust the board’s stiffness according to their personal preferences and changing water conditions, providing a customized experience.

Eco-Friendly and Space-Saving

Sustainability has become a priority today and inflatable SUP boards stand out for their reduced environmental footprint. The use of environmentally friendly materials in their manufacture and the reduction of the need for mass transportation contribute significantly to minimizing the environmental impact associated with the practice of this activity.

Paddle surfing, also known as Stand Up Paddle, SUP in its abbreviation, has experienced a boom in recent years very significant, who has not seen on a beach a group of people with giant boards? Perhaps, 15 years ago we did not know what they were for or if it was just a bigger surfboard. However, now almost everyone knows how to differentiate a surfboard from a paddle surf board and when we see a person in the sea on it, we are aware that he or she is practicing a different sport and it is not difficult to understand why. This water sport, could be defined as a form of displacement on the water with a board and the use of a paddle as a means to produce the displacement itself while standing. With its combination of relaxation, exercise and connection with nature, it has become an attractive option for those looking for a unique experience in the water. And what better way to enjoy this exciting activity than with the family? Paddle surf courses offer all this combination at an unimaginable level, the fact of being able to carry out this practice without involving months of learning, is a great point in favor. Either way, paddle surf rental emerges as the ideal option to create unique memories with the little ones at home on any given Sunday, exploring the Atlantic Ocean and covered by the rays of the sun, the latter only happens in the Canary Islands!

Origins of the sport

There are different theories about its origins, some find its roots in ancient Egypt, while other investigations point to its possible connection with the Polynesian peoples. Despite all the existing theories, the main attribution of its origin lies in Hawaii, specifically in Waikiki Beach, during the 1960s. At that time, surf instructors used canoe paddles for better visibility to guide their groups, observe the arrival of the waves and capture photographs of their clients. As time went by, there were evolutions in surfing technique and also in the materials used. In spite of this, the practice of paddle surfing continued, especially due to the advantages it offered for maintaining physical fitness on days without waves. In these conditions, it was practiced with the assistance of jet skis, a modality adopted by prominent surfers in Hawaii in the early 2000s. The introduction of this new sport brought with it numerous events that included special categories for paddle surfers (SUPers). In Spain, it made its entrance in the late 2000s and has since gained a legion of followers. Spanish Paddle Surfers have demonstrated their prowess by approaching the top spots in international competitions. The sport, which has its roots in ancient traditions and has evolved over time, remains an exciting water adventure with universal appeal.

An Adventure for All

Paddle surfing is a versatile and accessible activity for all ages and any physical condition. From toddlers to grandparents, everyone can participate and enjoy this water sport. Being able to rent a paddle surfboard allows the flexibility to choose sizes and styles suitable for each member of the family, ensuring that everyone is equipped to fully enjoy and also allows not having to make a very noticeable initial outlay. In addition, at Mojo Surf, we also offer paddle surf lessons, which are perfect for setting the foundation for free surfing. In addition to this paddle surf course, in our school, there are other modalities in the practice of this activity, as is the case of paddle surf yoga. At the same time, there is a remarkable point in relation to the paddle surf course and it is the peace of mind that comes from knowing that the mentors are real professionals. This idea is even more relevant when it is an activity with children, where the risk increases. Therefore, this option offers safety and translates into more enjoyment.

Family Connection in the natural environment

The natural environment of the water provides the perfect setting for strengthening family bonds. While paddling together, the family can enjoy relaxed conversations, laughter and the shared excitement of being on the water. Paddle surfing fosters a relaxed environment in which to work as a team, synchronizing to maintain balance and move forward together facilitates communication between members, while having fun and an enjoyable time. Either way, it is a family disconnection, much needed in the frenetic context in which we live.

Fun and Healthy Exercise

In addition to being fun, paddle surfing is a sport and offers health benefits. Paddling involves the use of several muscle groups, which contributes to the strengthening of the trunk, legs and arms. In addition to this, there is also the exercise of swimming, since there are times when you fall off! In other words, while the family enjoys the aquatic scenery, they are also participating in a physical activity that promotes a healthy lifestyle. Paddle surfing is a great way to combine exercise and fun for the whole family. It provides an opportunity to explore and enjoy the natural beauty from a unique perspective. Adventurers of all ages can immerse themselves in the tranquility of the water while exploring new and exciting places. Before jumping into the water, it is important to follow a few tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. It is advisable to receive a brief instruction on how to paddle and maintain balance on the board. In addition, selecting a paddling area suitable for the family’s skill level and water conditions is also very important. In summary, paddle surfing emerges as the ideal activity to enjoy as a family. Offering a unique combination of fun, exercise and connection with nature. So the next time you are looking for an exciting adventure to share with your loved ones, we will be waiting for you at Mojo Surf to teach you how to enjoy this sport!

The fascinating world of surfing is not only about surfing the best wave; it is also a social experience and a connection with nature. For surf lovers, a Surf Camp is not just a place to perfect skills on the board. It is a haven where comfort, exciting waves and the creation of real friendships are intertwined.

The Surf Camp as a haven of comfort

Imagine waking up to the soothing sound of waves crashing on the shore. This is just the beginning of a day in the life of a Surf Camp. These camps are designed with relaxation and proximity to the beach in mind. These residences for surfers are well equipped and often have an exceptional location. What becomes a cozy sanctuary after a day full of activities related to water and nature. Most Surf Camps offer modern amenities, from the basics such as comfortable beds or wifi in a common room, to private rooms to maintain the desired privacy and tranquility. This allows surfers to concentrate on their passion without sacrificing well-being. After all, after a day of conquering waves, nothing compares to relaxing in a cozy and comfortable space.

Personalized training in paradise

One of the biggest attractions of these camps is access to specialized surf instructors. Whether you are a beginner who is just getting on a board for the first time or an experienced surfer looking to perfect your skills, a Surf Camp offers personalized training, suitable for any level. The convenience of having expert instructors at your disposal allows you to progress quickly and push your limits safely. These professionals will not only teach you the basics, but will also share their passion and knowledge of the ocean, creating an educational and enriching experience.

The magic of friendship in the water

Beyond the waves and sand, Surf Camps are places where genuine friendships are formed. The community that develops among the surfers is unique; everyone shares a common passion for surfing and love for the ocean. Whether it’s exchanging tips on surfing techniques, sharing stories around the campfire or simply enjoying dinner together, friendships blossom in this relaxed and friendly environment. The shared experience of overcoming challenges or celebrating successes in the water creates a special bond between participants. The friendships formed on these adventures often last far beyond the camp itself, becoming connections that transcend geographical boundaries. And it’s not just limited to surfing; it also encompasses a variety of social events and activities outside of the water. From barbecues to outdoor movie nights, these camps offer opportunities for fun and relaxation after a day of surfing. The diversity of social activities also helps to strengthen the bonds between participants. Sharing laughs and anecdotes or participating in friendly competitions creates lasting memories and strengthens the sense of community.

Exploring new coasts and cultures

This experience also offers the opportunity to explore new coastlines and immerse yourself in different cultures. These camps are often located in exotic destinations that offer more than just exciting waves. From vibrant nightlife to delicious local cuisine, a Surf Camp is a gateway to unique experiences. The convenience of having everything organized, from accommodations to activities in and out of the water, allows participants to focus on making the most of their trip. Exploring new places with a group of newly made friends adds a special touch to the overall Surf Camp experience.

The connection with nature

A crucial element of comfort in a surf camp is the direct connection with nature. In the case of Mojo Surf, our surf house is located a few meters from the beach, although, in many cases, these camps are usually located in picturesque places, surrounded by the majesty of the ocean and the serenity of the beach. The experience of waking up to the sea breeze and the view of the infinite horizon adds a magical touch to the stay. The closeness to nature not only contributes to the beauty of the surroundings, but also gives participants a unique opportunity to relax and feel the closeness of the natural environment. Where it is possible to meditate at sunrise on the beach or enjoy a quiet walk along the coast at sunset, the connection with nature is unparalleled.

Exciting challenges and self-improvement

The comfort of a camp is not limited to the physical aspect; it also involves the emotional comfort of facing challenges and overcoming fears. Learning to surf is not only a technical skill, but also an emotional adventure. Instructors at these camps are trained to guide participants through these challenges, creating a supportive environment where self-improvement is celebrated. Facing the waves, especially for beginners, can be intimidating. However, the close-knit environment of surfers provides a safe and supportive environment to test new skills and overcome barriers. The security of knowing that you are surrounded by people who share your concerns and will celebrate your successes is an integral part of the experience.

Positive impact on mental health

Another key aspect, and one that provides great benefit, is the positive impact on mental health. The combination of consistent physical activity, connection to nature and the formation of meaningful relationships contributes to an environment that promotes emotional well-being. The sound of the ocean, the feel of the salty breeze and the relationship with other surfers create an environment that relieves stress and promotes disconnection from routine. The emotional quality experienced at a camp goes beyond simple fun; it becomes a powerful tool for improving mental health and finding balance in everyday life.
Ultimately, the comfort of a Surf Camp extends beyond the physical facilities. The connection with nature, overcoming exciting challenges, social events and the positive impact on mental health are fundamental elements of this unique experience. If you are looking to not only improve your surfing skills, but also immerse yourself in an environment that nurtures you on a physical and emotional level, at Mojo Surf our camp awaits you that you can customize to your liking. Get ready for an adventure that goes beyond the waves, offering a holistic experience that will transform your relationship with surfing and the surrounding community.
